The main advantage is that umbilical cord blood transplants are well tolerated despite low HLA compatibility, so it can be found valid units, according to this criterion, for the majority of patients. One of the problems of its usage derives from the scarce number of cells that are in the small amount of blood that can be drawn from the umbilical cord after the newborn is has separated from the placenta by cord management section. This implies that the blood of the umbilical cord (TSCU) transplant procedure is slow, and therefore be slow the emergence of leukocytes in the blood of the patient. To obtain a good prendimiento of cells of the SCU strategies of expansion or multiplication cell in the laboratory, have been searched without that studies of the last decade have resulted in clinical benefit, direct infusion in bone marrow and transplantation of two units of SCU. Researchers at the service of Hematology of the Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid reported an method which consists in the infusion of auxiliary cells very selected, obtained from a donor adult, immediately after the transplant of the SCU, to get shorten the period without leukocytes in the blood of the patient. This strategy of transplant dual, as they call their authors, is achieving survival rates, even better than the patients transplanted at the same hospital with spinal or non-family adult donor blood cells.
